While the smell of a new car is extremely satisfying for many, unfortunately, this particular scent often diminishes by the time drivers get to grips with their gears. But, where does the new car smell come from, and how can you get it back?
Here, Katie Newman, a Fragrance Expert at Carfume, reveals where the new car smell comes from and how to stop it fading away.
Volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, are the reason for the ‘new car smell’. The chemicals used during the manufacturing process, including in tyres, seat belts, and plastics, break down over time and release VOCs, which give people that desirable and satisfying new car scent. Over time, the smell can fade as other odours from foods, drinks, or clothes overpower and replace it.
To help stop the new car smell from fading, follow these simple tips:
Cleaning basics
There are plenty of things that can build up in your car over time, whether it’s food crumbs, drink spillages, hair or even dead skin. Making sure you hoover your car seats and floor mats regularly will help to reduce any of these smells from lingering or overpowering the car’s scent.
Ventilation is key
To prevent lingering odours, particularly after transporting food, it’s advised to ventilate your car. Much like opening windows at home to clear stale air, allow your car windows to be open for 15 minutes before driving, whenever possible.
Clean your vents
Cleaning your car's vents is crucial for improving air quality and eliminating odours. Many people overlook this task, but it's simple to do. You don’t need any special tools; simply get an old toothbrush and some diluted dish soap or shampoo and clean the vents out. If there is a musty smell coming from the vents, then it might be better to replace the air filters. For a deeper clean, consider using a dedicated interior cleaning spray with a lint-free cloth. These products are designed to safely clean various surfaces within your car and can help eliminate embedded odours, contributing to a fresher scent.
Simple overnight hack!
To eliminate persistent car odours overnight, place an open container of baking soda infused with a few drops of your preferred essential oil, such as lemon or vanilla, under a car seat. The baking soda will absorb unwanted smells and moisture, while the essential oils will release a pleasant, lasting fragrance, giving your car the fresh scent of a new vehicle.
Use an air freshener
If you’ve lost the new car smell, then don’t worry! You can easily restore a pleasant aroma to your car's interior, by investing in a high-quality air freshener. Not only will this revitalise your car's scent, but it also allows you to select a fragrance that perfectly suits your preferences. Carfume’s air fresheners are inspired by some of the UK’s favourite scents, are refillable, and are now available in major retailers including Halfords, B&M, The Range, and Asda.
